The African Classical Music Ensemble was set up Tunde Jegede to celebrate and honour the rich and vibrant Classical Music Traditions of Africa and its Diaspora. Since its formation in 1991 it has evolved through many incarnations, been a launching vehicle and learning ground for many new emerging musicians and served as the crossroads for various innovative collaborations.


The African Classical Music Ensemble have worked with a range of international artists, singers and musicians, including legendary Malian Vocalist, Kasse Mady Diabate, Malian Vocal Diva, Oumou Sangare, Zimbabwean leading Mbira Player, Chartwell Ditiro, the extraordinary Riti and Molo player, Juldeh Camara and the young amazing Kora Maestro Wali Cham. The ensemble have also collaborated in cross-cultural projects with artists such as the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, The Samadhi Ensemble, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of France.  


The debut album of the African Classical Music Ensemble, ‘There was a Time’  is a beautiful acoustic recording featuring Kasse Mady Diabate and the incredible Flutist, Amadou Barre. The ensemble is also featured in the documentary film, Mali by the American film-maker, Ron Wyman.
